Review: Hardly Strictly Bluegrass delights from Day One

The 11th annual Hardly Strictly Bluegrass festival opened in triumphant fashion on Friday.

Highlights from Day One included Led Zeppelin legend Robert Plant performing with his talented Band of Joy, gifted lyricist John Prine crooning from his A-plus songbook, Sonic Youth frontman Thurston Moore embracing his Americana side and Northern California harmonica hero Charlie Musselwhite delivering the blues with much pizazz. Robert Plant appears at El Cosmico

Festival brings hundreds from around state. There were rumors for about two weeks being whispered around the Permian Basin.

Big Chill 2011: the DiS review

Robert Plant and The Band of Joy (including blues/country legends Buddy Miller, Darrell Scott and Patty Griffin) could hardly be described as the sound of the future. But unlike many aging musicians (and especially with such a definitive back catalogue to fall back upon), Plant’s devotion to creating striking and relevant new music should be generously applauded. Robert Plant on Singing and Aging: ‘I Can Go to High Places’

Robert Plant may be 63 years old now, but the former Led Zeppelin singer is still in possession of a voice that is as distinct and instantly recognizable as a fingerprint. Even though he is in the sixth decade of his life, Plant’s voice is aging like a fine wine or cheese; as he gets older, it many ways, it actually gets better. (more…)

The Big Chill: day three – review

Eastnor Castle, Herefordshire — Sunday morning at the Big Chill arrived like a hangover. When festivalgoers crawled out of their tents they were greeted by a drizzly day – unlike Kanye West, who reportedly stayed at the £7,000-per-night Eastnor Castle and probably woke up feeling refreshed.

The final day is typically a comedown at any festival and the Big Chill is no different, with the emphasis on world music and laidback DJ sets. There are also fewer memorable costumes to be seen, so special mention goes to the woman wandering around in a bridal gown. (more…)

Review – Robert Plant’s last concert with the Band Of Joy

The former Led Zeppelin frontman ended a 13 month world tour with Band of Joy, his group for his most recent album, with a powerful 90-minute show at the Big Chill concert at Eastnor Castle Deer Park in Herefordshire.

Backed by the group he called “just good looking old folk”, Plant was emotional about the group’s end but this did not stop him joking with the crowd. (more…)

Robert Plant/Ben Harper @ Arena Civica, Milano 20/07/11

(more…)
